Duration 2 hours
Imperial and Political London is explored in this broad diagonal sweep across the West End and Westminster. We start the tour at Hyde Park corner, progress along Piccadilly and St James’s, saying hello to Beau Brummel on the way, see the Duke of York’s steps at Carlton House terrace on the Mall; the site of the pleasure palace of the disreputable Prince Regent.
We continue walking through Horse Guard’s Parade to Whitehall; the scene of the beheading of King Charles I outside his father’s gracious Banqueting House on Whitehall – all that is left of the ambitious Whitehall palace. We progress down Whitehall to the scene of the political squabbles over the ‘battle of the styles’ for the government buildings on Whitehall and into Parliament Square and Big Ben.
We finish the tour off in the charming streets around Smith Square where Margaret Thatcher greeted the Conservative faithful after her election victories.
